Svarak, give me warmth!

The weather is getting colder as the days go by and we find ourselves looking for ways to stay warm.  In my opinion, the best way to do that is with a cup (or many more) of Svařák (mulled wine).  Svařák is a warm drink made from red wine, some citrus fruit, and some spices.  Recipes vary depending on where you go, and may contain some vodka or rum.  You can find Svařák almost anywhere in the Czech Republic during the cold winter months as well as in many other European countries.

To get the full Christmas experience you should definitely go to Old Town Square Christmas markets and sip on your Svařák with a side of Trdelník.  Once you find your limbs too numb to feel, you might as well drink some more or just find yourself a cozy, warm place to enjoy additional Svařák.  Some places make Svařák from scratch and others go with the cheap instant mix added to red wine.  I would bet that the Svařák in Old Town Square is a cheap mix but the atmosphere makes up for it.  In most cases, you will be able to taste whether it is an authentic recipe.

Lucerna Cafe

A few weeks ago, I had a very tasty Svařák at Lucerna Cafe.  I might even go as far as saying it was the best I ever had.  I could have drank a barrel of that stuff, but I think that after three cups, it was a good place to stop.  Nevertheless, I think you will find good, quality Svařák in most cafes around Prague.

Too cold to go search for the perfect Svařák?  No worries, you can easily make it at home with this recipe:

Ingredients:

1 bottle of dry red wine
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
6 green cardamon pods
4 whole all spice
1 small piece of nutmeg or ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
1 thinly sliced tangerine
½ cup of water
2 tbsp. of honey, adjust to taste

Place all ingredients in a large pot. Cover and simmer under low heat for 40 minutes.

Voilà!  You just created perfection :)

Stay warm!
